 Experimentation 1 - Photography

I captured a photograph of a model in a studio with a white backdrop. I adjusted the lighting to create a dramatic effect on one side of the model's face.

After taking the photo, I transferred it to my computer and made some edits to Photoshop. Firstly, I used the black-and-white tool to adjust the image and then I played with the colors to give it a unique appearance. Next, I cropped the image to emphasize the model's facial expression. Finally, I applied a black-and-white filter to the image to give it a finishing touch.

I believe that it could have been improved by applying some editing techniques in Photoshop. Adding some noise and filters could have enhanced the expression on the model's face and made the image more captivating.

I imported one of the photos I took in a studio into Adobe Photoshop and converted the layer into a smart object. This allowed me to make changes without overwriting the original image. Next, I added despeckle noise to give the image a vintage look and adjusted the settings. Furthermore, I added a black-and-white filter and adjusted the gradient and colours using "image" > "adjustments" > "gradient map."

I wanted this image to stand out and be more exciting than a standard black-and-white photo, so I added a gradient map. The image is intended for people interested in unconventional and vibrant things. I drew inspiration from the artist Dom Sebastian, known for his focus on bright and colourful projects.

To enhance the project, I could distort the image to make it more visually appealing. For example, I could distort the face, add a blur, or warp the facial features.

For this photo series, my goal was to capture the model's expressions as the main focus of each photograph, allowing the emotion to be conveyed clearly and give the audience an idea of the potential impact of the images. First, I set up a plain black background to ensure the model stood out. Then, I adjusted my camera settings and asked the models to display a range of expressions, taking close-up shots of their faces. I positioned the lighting to one side of the model's face to create a dramatic and intense look. After that, I transferred the images from the camera to my phone and then to Photoshop for editing. I made some colour adjustments during the editing process and converted the images to black and white to give them more depth and emphasize the model's expressions. Additionally, I added a small amount of noise to the pictures to add texture and enhance the overall effect.

EXPERIMENTATION THREE
THE LOLLIPOP

To create "THE LOLLIPOP" photos I made sure to incorporate colourful emphasis to make the colour of the lollipop stand out from the rest of the objects. I did this because the broken red lollipop symbolises a broken heart and angry and distressed feelings. I achieved this by having multiple people hold a lollipop in front of the camera that I set up. Once I was happy with the results, I imported the photos I liked into Photoshop. Then, in Photoshop, I created another layer copied the first layer (the photograph) onto the second layer and converted that second layer to black and white. Next, I used the eraser tool to remove the lollipop so that the vibrant red could show through.

I was successful in this project because I effectively conveyed the sense of anger that I intended to communicate to the audience. I felt confident in my ability to accomplish this task because I have previous experience with similar projects and I am skilled in using Photoshop.

However, there are areas where I could have improved. For instance, I could have added more depth to the picture by incorporating an image overlay to give it a vintage look and evoke a nostalgic feeling.
